Ridgeland – Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15, 2015, the American Council on Alcohol Problems (ACAP) held its annual convention in Ridgeland, Mississippi at Hyatt Place Jackson/Ridgeland.

There were eight state affiliates present representing Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Delegates heard an inspirational message from Dr. Rick Henson, pastor of Oakdale Baptist Church, Brandon, Mississippi.  Dr. Henson received the William N. Plymat Temperance Award for outstanding contributions to the cause of abstinence in America.  Andy and Karen Taggart gave moving testimony on the effects of substance abuse on the family.

Dr. Bill Waller, Chief Justice, Mississippi Supreme court spoke on the drug court system in Mississippi.  He stated that drug courts offer the incentive of a chance to remain out of jail and be employed, and the sanction of a jail sentence if participants fail to remain drug-free and in compliance with all program requirements.  If they complete a program of good behavior, some may have their records wiped clean.

Lt. Colonel Mike Perkins, Deputy Director, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics spoke on the topic of Spice.

Dr. Larry Walker, Director, National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi spoke on Canabidiol Oil (CBD) and marijuana.

In addition to hearing reports from the various states, members also handled business matters, one of which included the adoption of one resolution:

Resolution of Concern Dealing with Use of Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs notes the disastrous mental, spiritual, physical and psychological effects of the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and illegal drugs upon the user and abuser.
